In recent months, the REC market has seen a sharp surge, but this is just the beginning. A study by the Politecnico di Milano has estimated that in 5 years there will be around 40,000 RECs in Italy involving 1.2 million households, 200,000 offices, and 10,000 SMEs. As for Europe, by 2050, an estimated 264 million citizens will have joined the energy market, generating about 45% of the total renewable electricity for the community.
What is an REC?
A Renewable Energy Community (REC) is made up of people who collaborate to produce, consume, and/or exchange renewable energy locally and sustainably. In other words, it consists of individuals, families, businesses, organizations, and communities working together to promote the generation of renewable energy from sources such as the sun, wind, water, and biomass.
Members can be either owners (prosumers) or users (consumers) of renewable energy systems, creating a virtuous cycle of energy reuse that ensures significant benefits for everyone involved in the REC.
What are the benefits of a Renewable Energy Community?
-
Reduction of greenhouse gas emissions
-
Lower energy costs
-
Decreased dependence on fossil fuels
-
Increased energy security
-
Improved air quality
-
Greater resilience to energy outages
-
Strengthened social cohesion among members
